Robin Hobb pseudonym of American writer Margaret Ogden, author of large-scale fantasy cycles, the most famous of which are “The Rainforest Chronicles” (about a nation of dragon caster) and “Saga of the Living Ships” (about thinking ships) – both take place in the world of Elderlings. The “Son of a Soldier” trilogy, where the first book – “The Way of the Shaman”, Robin Hobb created in parallel with the development of the world Elderlings, it is a completely self-contained cycle, obviously, needed the writer to implement the ideas that do not fit into the universes already created by her.
The “Son of a Soldier” trilogy includes the novels:
“The Shaman’s Way,
“The Forest Magician,
“The Magic of the Renegade.”
This series is suitable for those who are new to Robin Hobb’s work, as it is limited to only three novels and does not require knowledge of the author’s other worlds. For fans of the writer’s work, The Shaman’s Way can be a source of fresh impressions and emotions.
About the writer
She was born in 1952 in Berkeley, California, but moved to Alaska with her family as a child. At first such a change of climate and whole way of life shocked Margaret, but she soon fell in love with the American north, and when she grew up, she stayed to live there.
Her full name is Margaret Astrid Lindholm Ogden and she uses two pseudonyms, Megan Lindholm and Robin Hobb, to publish her novels and novellas.
Margaret fell in love with life away from civilization so much that she left university after her freshman year, married a fisherman, and settled on an island and the Alaskan coast with him. The writer is now raising grandchildren, but continues to work, expanding the fantasy universes she has already created and creating new ones.
She began writing fantasy stories for fun while waiting for her husband to go to sea, and today is one of the world’s best-known contemporary fantasy authors and the winner of such prestigious awards as the Hugo and the Nebula.
The Son of a Soldier Trilogy
The Son of a Soldier trilogy is not connected to previous worlds created by Robin Hobb – the events unfold in a place new to the writer’s fans, remotely reminiscent of the North American continent. There is a prairie-like steppe zone – almost a desert with sparse dried grass and scorching sun – if a forest zone inhabited by tribes whose beliefs are associated with the cult of ancestors and with the spirits of the forest.
“The Shaman’s Way” plot.
According to the laws of Gernia, the first son of an aristocrat inherits his father’s title and fortune, the second must devote himself to military service, and the third must become a priest. Nevar Bourville is the middle son in a family of new Guernian nobles; he knew his destiny as a teenager and prepared for it. Warriors are always needed in Gernia – the war with the forest people of the Specks has been going on for years, and so far neither side can prevail.
As a child, Nevar showed more talents needed for a peacemaker than for a warrior, and to pass the examinations for the right to become an officer, no matter how hard the boy tried. His father’s disappointment weighing heavily on his soul, Nevar decided to embark on a journey to find out what his destiny was and learn about the world beyond his hometown.
